THE ABBEY

Nonantola is renowned for its Abbey, a historic place of hospitality and culture that serves as the starting point of the Romea Nonantolana, a thousand-year-old communication route between Northern Italy and Rome.

The foundation of the Nonantola Abbey dates back to the time of the Lombards, and thanks to its strategic location, it became one of the most important and powerful abbeys in Europe, on par with those of Cluny and Canterbury. It was a privileged place for the passage of Carolingian emperors and popes, who sought refuge along with their courts, as well as for merchants and wayfarers.

Together with the Modena Cathedral, the Nonantola Abbey is one of the most important examples of Romanesque art in Europe and continues to be an important destination for artistic, cultural, and religious tourism.
